FDA UFI For Food Facility Registrations

Beginning October 1, 2020, as per 21 CFR 1.232(a)(2), domestic and foreign facilities must submit a Unique Facility Identifier (UFI) recognized as acceptable to FDA in their food facility registrations.

Currently, FDA recognizes DUNS number as the only acceptable UFI for food facility registrations.

DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) is a 9-digit number issued by D&B.

No, A company business registration number cannot be used in place of DUNS. Only a valid 9-digit DUNS issued by D&B must be provided.

Yes, companies located outside the US can request a DUNS number either online or by contacting the local D&B office.

Please visit DUNS official website https://www.dnb.com or contact the local DUNS office. If you need LMG assistance in obtaining DUNS number, our fee is USD 100/DUNS request. Please contact us for more info.

DUNS is free for the purpose of FDA registration.

DUNS is location specific; each physical location needs to have its own DUNS number. If the registered office and manufacturing facility are same, you can use same DUNS number, otherwise you will need to obtain a separate DUNS number for the manufacturing facility.

DUNS requests can take up to 30-45 days.

D&B has a paid expedited service. Please get in touch with the local D&B office for details.

As per the regulation the facility name & address in DUNS database and food facility registration must match exactly. So if there is any change in your facility details then the DUNS details must be updated too.
